The most popular Shopify theme in 2026 is Dawn, Shopify's free default, running on roughly 446,600 stores in our October 2026 crawl. Horizon, Shopify's newer free theme, is second at about 218,200 stores. Together they power around four in ten of the roughly 1.6 million active Shopify stores we track, and the first paid theme on the list, Prestige, sits at about 36,800.
So if you are asking which themes are the best free Shopify themes, the market has mostly answered for you. The more useful question is which one fits your catalog, your niche and how much you want to customize. That is what the rest of this post covers.
Roasan crawls public storefront data from about 1.6 million active Shopify stores. Each storefront reports the name of its live theme, so we can count how many stores run each one. Here are the six largest, as observed in October 2026.
A few things stand out.
The counts are name-based. A store's theme reports its name, and we group stores by that name. If a merchant duplicates Dawn and renames the copy "Main store theme" or "Dawn - Black Friday," that store may be counted under the new name instead of Dawn. A developer who rebuilds a custom theme on top of Dawn's code may also rename it.
That means the real install base for Dawn, and for every theme on this list, is probably somewhat higher than shown. The ranking itself is very unlikely to change, since the gaps between the top themes are large.
The same rule applies to the Horizon family. Horizon has sibling themes such as Savor, Fabric and Pitch. Each of those reports its own name, so a store running Savor is counted under Savor, not Horizon. The 218,200 figure is stores running the theme named Horizon.
Shopify themes come in two kinds:
According to Shopify's help center, a paid theme is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and it covers one store. You can preview a paid theme in your admin and customize it with your own products before you buy, and your changes are kept if you purchase.
What you get for the money is mostly built-in features and design. Paid themes tend to include things like promotional sections, richer product page layouts and more merchandising options out of the box. With a free theme you often add those features through apps or custom code instead.
What the numbers above suggest: most merchants start free and stay free. That is a reasonable default. A paid theme makes sense when it replaces several apps you would otherwise install, or when your brand needs a look the free themes cannot reach without a developer.
Prices are from the Shopify Theme Store as of October 2026.
| Theme | Free or paid | Price | Made by | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dawn | Free | $0 | Shopify | Image-led stores that want a clean, minimal start |
| Horizon | Free | $0 | Shopify | New stores that want block-based editing and the newest Shopify features |
| Debut | Free (retired) | Not available to new stores | Shopify | Nobody starting today; existing users should plan a move |
Shopify describes Dawn as a minimalist theme that puts product images first. Large imagery, simple fonts, product filtering and image galleries come standard. It has been the free default for years, which means almost every app developer tests against it and most Shopify freelancers know its code well.
Pick Dawn if you want the safest, most widely supported free starting point, especially for a small to mid-size catalog. Its weak spot is that it looks like a lot of other stores. Expect to put real work into photography and branding to stand out.
Horizon is Shopify's newer free theme, released with the Summer '25 Edition. It is built around nested theme blocks: you can drop blocks inside other blocks and rearrange more of the page without code. Shopify also added AI tools that generate custom blocks from a text description, which work in Horizon themes.
Horizon is also a family. It shipped alongside free sibling themes that share the same foundation with a different design: Savor for food and drink, Fabric for fashion, Dwell for home and lifestyle, Ritual for wellness and skincare, Pitch for DTC brands, and Atelier, Heritage, Tinker and Vessel for other styles.
Pick Horizon (or a sibling) if you are launching a new store in 2026. It is where Shopify is putting its theme work.
This is the most common choice merchants face now, so here is the short version.
Our counts reflect this. Dawn still has twice the stores, but Horizon reached about 218,200 in roughly 17 months, which is a fast climb for any theme.
Debut was Shopify's default before Dawn. It predates Online Store 2.0, so it lacks sections on every page, app blocks and the newer editor features. Shopify retired it in 2022 and it no longer gets feature updates.
If you are one of the roughly 71,600 stores still running Debut, migrating to Dawn or Horizon is worth scheduling. Apps increasingly assume Online Store 2.0 features such as app embeds and app blocks.
Refresh is another free Shopify theme, described as a bold theme focused on product quality and brand storytelling. It suits stores with fewer, more considered products where each item needs room to be explained. About 41,600 stores run it, making it the third most used free theme that is still available.
Prestige, by Maestrooo, costs $400 and is positioned for premium, high-end brands. It is the most used paid theme in our data at about 36,800 stores. If your price points are high and your brand depends on a polished, editorial look, it is one of the safest paid picks because of its large user base.
Impulse, by Archetype Themes, costs $500. It is aimed at fashion and apparel stores and is built around promotions and merchandising: sale messaging, promotional sections and conversion-focused layouts. About 29,500 stores run it. It fits stores that run frequent campaigns and want those tools in the theme instead of in apps.
Popularity is a useful filter, but it is not the decision. Work through these in order.
A theme demo with eight perfect product photos tells you little. Preview the theme with your products, your apps and your images, then test the home, collection and product pages in Google PageSpeed Insights. Most speed problems come from apps and oversized images, not the theme itself, so test with your actual setup.
Look at what stores in your niche run. Dawn leads in almost every niche we track, which tells you a free theme is not holding those stores back. Niche-specific themes like Savor (food) or Impulse (fashion) save setup time because their sections already fit the product type.
You can check any competitor's theme in seconds with the Shopify theme detector. For a fuller picture of a store, including apps and product counts, the store analyzer shows everything on one page.
See which theme any store uses
Try it freeBefore paying $400 or $500, list the features you need: bundles, promotional banners, size charts, quick view, mega menus. If a paid theme covers three or four apps you would otherwise pay monthly for, the one-time cost can be cheaper within a year. If you would still need the same apps, a free theme is the better deal. Our app detector shows which apps similar stores pair with their theme.
Heavily customized themes are harder to update. If you plan to edit code, pick a widely used theme like Dawn so help is easy to find. If you want to avoid code entirely, Horizon's block-based editor gives you more room without a developer.
Themes are not a one-time decision for most stores. Brands switch themes during redesigns, often before big sales seasons. If you follow a set of competitors, Brandtracker records when a store changes its theme or apps, so you see the redesign without checking manually.
Dawn. In our October 2026 crawl it ran on about 446,600 stores, roughly twice as many as Horizon, the second most used theme. Dawn is free and made by Shopify.
The most used free themes are Dawn, Horizon and Refresh, all made by Shopify. For a new store, Horizon or one of its siblings (Savor, Fabric, Dwell, Ritual, Pitch and others) is a good start because Shopify's newest theme features arrive there first. Dawn remains the most widely supported option.
For a new store, usually yes. Horizon uses nested theme blocks, so you can change more of the layout without code, and it supports Shopify's AI block generation. Dawn has a larger ecosystem of tutorials and tested apps. If Dawn already works for your store, switching is optional.

| Refresh | Free | $0 | Shopify | Brands that lean on product storytelling and bold visuals |
| Prestige | Paid | $400 | Maestrooo | Premium and luxury brands |
| Impulse | Paid | $500 | Archetype Themes | Fashion and apparel stores that run frequent promotions |
Sometimes. A paid theme is a one-time payment for one store, and Prestige ($400) and Impulse ($500) are the most used. They are worth it when they replace apps you would otherwise pay for or give you a design the free themes cannot. Most stores in our data run free themes.
Stores that already have Debut can keep running it, and about 71,600 do. It was retired in 2022, cannot be installed by new stores and no longer receives feature updates, so moving to Dawn or Horizon is recommended.
Enter the store's address in the Shopify theme detector. It reads the live theme name from the storefront. Keep in mind that a store may have renamed its theme, so the name you see is the one the merchant set.
